Samdrup Jongkhar - Trashigang

Vanmorgen zijn we vanuit een subtropische omgeving naar de hooglanden op ongeveer 1000m hoogte gereden. Langs de weg hingen veel gekleurde gebedsvlaggetjes, maar ook lange verticale witte vlaggen (ter nagedachtenis van overledenen). De nationale ‘highway’van Bhutan is een smalle vaak slechte bergweg, grotendeels onverhard en 1-baans. Men is bezig om de weg te verbreden en te asfalteren, de wegwerkzaamheden zijn uitbesteedt aan de Indiase overheid. Overal zie je Indiase gastarbeiders werken en langs de weg staan golfplaten krotjes waar de Indiase mensen in ‘wonen’. We reden door het leefgebied van de Bengaalse tijger, deze hebben we helaas niet gezien. In Wamrong hebben we geluncht, op dat moment kwamen veel kinderen uit school in hun traditionele kleding (de gho (1) voor de jongens, de kira (2) voor de meisjes). Langs de weg staan roadsigns met soms grappige teksten: It’s not a rally, enjoy the valley. Uiteindelijk hebben we een hele dag gereden om 180km af te leggen. Achteraf bleek dit nog best snel te zijn… Een super smalle stijle onverharde weg met scherpe haarspeld bochten was voor vandaag de laatste beproeving om met de bus bij het hotel in Trashigang (3) te komen. Het mega grote hotel lag op een berg en wij waren de enige gasten. Op ons verzoek maakt men het eten minder pittig, de Bhutanen eten pepers alsof het gewone groenten zijn. Het eten smaakt verder prima, rijst, groente, aardappelen, kip, varken, vis, noedels, etc. Mijn eerste Bhutaanse biertje (Druk 11000) smaakte prima, op het etiket stond dat het een extra strong biertje was, 8%, ik denk echter dat het hooguit 4% was.

1)The gho is the traditional and national dress for men in Bhutan. Introduced in the 17th century by Ngawang Namgyal, 1st Zhabdrung Rinpoche, to give the Ngalop people a more distinctive identity, it is a knee-length robe tied at the waist by a cloth belt known as the kera. On festive occasions, it is worn with a kabney. (scarf). The government of Bhutan requires all men to wear the gho if they work in a government office or school. Men are also required to wear the ghoon formal occasions. In its modern form, the law dates from 1989, but the driglam namzha dress code is much older.

2) The kira is the national dress for women in Bhutan. It is an ankle-length dress consisting of a rectangular piece of woven fabric. It is wrapped and folded around the body and is pinned at both shoulders, usually with silver brooches, and bound at the waist with a long belt. The kira is usually worn with a wonju (long-sleeved blouse) inside and a short jacket or toego outside. A rachu is worn over the traditional dress kira.

3) Trashigang, is a town in eastern Bhutan and the district capital of the Trashigang Dzongkhag (district). The town lies to the east side of the valley above the Drangme Chhu river just south of where it is joined by the Gamri River. Trashigang is the eastern terminus of the Lateral Road, Bhutan's main highway leading to Phuntsholing in the southwest. The population of Trashigang was estimated to about 3000 in according to the 2005 census. Trashigang is the largest district in Bhutan.It has three sub-districts and fifteen gewogs. Sherubtse College was the first accredited college in Bhutan, founded in 1966 by a group of Jesuits under the leadership of William Mackey. As of 2003 it became part of the newly created Royal University of Bhutan system that comprises all public post-secondary schools in Bhutan. Trashigang is served by Yonphula Airport. Rangjung, Kanglung and Wamrong are some of the major towns under Trashigang district.
