Ook vandaag hadden we weer een mooie route, door de bergen, langs kleine dorpjes, rijst- en maisvelden, langs de weg stonden bananenplanten, we reden langs meerdere watervallen.(oa. Namling Brrak) en we hebben geluncht op 3000m hoogte. Na de lunch zijn we verder gereden en passeerden de Thrumshing La pass (1), hier hadden we uitzicht op besneeuwde toppen van de Himalaya. We reden door het leefgebied (Phrumsengla nationaal park) van de rode panda (2), ook deze hebben we helaas niet gezien, wel bloed fazanten (3). Via de Ura vallei passeerden we de Ura La pass, waar we uitzicht hadden op Gangkhar Puensum (4), de op een na hoogste berg van Bhutan (7570m). Aangekomen bij de Mountain Lodge in Bumthang (5) bleek de kachel op de kamer al te branden. We zitten boven de 2500m , dus het koelt hier ’s avonds flink af.
1)Thrumshing La, also called Thrumshingla Pass and Donga Pass, is the second-highest mountain pass in Bhutan, connecting its central and eastern regions across the otherwise impregnable Donga range that has separated populations for centuries. Along the pass, there are many sheer drops of thousands of feet at the roadside. The terrain at the pass is barren and icy. At the highest point, travelers leave prayer flags in thanks for safe arrival to the pass. In a matter of hours, eastbound travelers descend the pass southward along the Lateral Road from elevations of nearly 3,800 metres to just 650 metres, transitioning from alpine forests into semi-tropical orange producing valleys.
2) De kleine panda, rode panda of katbeer is een bedreigde diersoort die in Azië leeft. Net zoals de reuzenpanda eet hij bamboe. De rode panda is geen beer, maar is nauwer verwant aan wasberen dan aan beren. De vachtkleur is rood- of kastanjebruin, afgezien van witte randjes aan de oren en witte vlekken op de wangen, rond de snuit en boven de ogen. Vanaf de ogen lopen brede, donkere "huilstrepen" omlaag. De staart bevat lichte en donkere ringen. De rode panda heeft half-intrekbare klauwen, waarmee het dier goed kan klimmen. De lichaamslengte bedraagt 50 tot 64 cm, de staartlengte 28 tot 50 cm en het gewicht 3 tot 6 kg.
3) This relatively small, short-tailed pheasant is widespread and fairly common in eastern Himalayas, ranging across India, Nepal, Bhutan and China. Since the trend of the population appears to be slowly decreasing, the species has been evaluated as Least Concern by IUCN in 2009.
4) De Gangkhar Puensum is met 7570 meter de op een na hoogste berg van Bhutan. Het is tevens de hoogste onbeklommen berg ter wereld. Er zijn verschillende meningen over de exacte hoogte van de berg. De hoogte is vastgesteld door een Britse expeditie in 1986, maar die slaagde er niet in om de top van de berg te bereiken. Een ander dispuut is of de berg tot het grondgebied van Bhutan behoort of tot China. Kaarten van deze regio zijn over het algemeen erg onnauwkeurig, mede doordat er een conflict tussen de twee landen is over de gemeenschappelijke grens. Sinds 1994 is het in Bhutan verboden om bergen hoger dan 6000 meter te beklimmen, uit respect voor lokale spirituele overtuigingen. Sinds 2003 is bergbeklimmen volledig verboden in het land.
5)Bumthang (officialy Jakar) is a town in the central-eastern region of Bhutan. It is the district capital (dzongkhag thromde) ofBumthang District and the location of Jakar Dzong, the regional dzong fortress. The name Jakar roughly translates as "white bird" in reference to its foundation myth, according to which a roosting white bird signaled the proper and auspicious location to found a monastery around 1549. The town is the site of Chakhar Lhakhang, a small and unassuming temple which marks the site of the "Iron Palace" of Sindhu Raja, the Indian monarch who is believed to have first invited Guru Rinpoche to Bhutan in 746. The current building is said to have been constructed by Terton Dorje Lingpa in the 14th century. According to the Jakar foundation myth, a roosting white bird signaled the proper and auspicious location to found a monastery around 1549. The settlement thus earned the moniker Jakar, meaning "white bird. There are many significant Buddhist sacred sites nearby the town, such as Kurjey Lhakhang, which holds a body print of Guru Rinpoche; Jambey Lhakhang, one of the 108 monasteries that in mythology were miraculously constructed by King Songten Gampo in one night; and Tamsshing Lhakhag established by Terton Padma Lingpa (1450–1521). In addition, one of the country's largest monastic colleges, Lhodrak Kharchhu Monastery, overlooks Jakar.
