Omdat de rit van Dawson naar Kluane National Park (1) in 1 dag niet haalbaar was, hebben we een nacht in Whitehorse (2) op de Robert Service campsite (3) gekampeerd. De wegen (highway) zijn hier 2-baans en zowel verhard als onverhard. De wegen zijn erg slecht, door de strenge winters (-40 graden) vriest het wegdek kapot. Het stadje Whitehorse had verder niks te bieden, ondanks dat het de hoofdstad van Yukon is. In Whitehorse hebben we vanmorgen de SS Klondike II (4) bezocht, een raderboot uit 1937. Daarna koffie gehaald bij de Canadese Starbucks genaamd Tim Hortons. Het was vanuit Whitehorse ongeveer 3 uur rijden naar Cottonwood campsite aan Kluane Lake. De route naar Kluane National Park was erg mooi, ik heb geprobeerd wakker te blijven, maar dat is niet helemaal gelukt. Tot nu toe heb ik hier 1 nacht goed geslapen, dat was toen ik de Sourtoe Cocktail heb gedronken. Gisteren bij de drankenhandel bleek Yukon Jack te zijn uitgekocht en ik weet ook niet waar ik zo 1 2 3 een menselijke teen vandaan haal. Nu eerst maar een biertje (Chilkoot, Yukon Brewing) in de zon aan Kluane Lake.
1)Het nationaal park Kluane ligt in het zuidwesten van het territorium Yukon in Canada. Het park, dat is opgericht in 1976, omvat zo'n 22.000 km². In het park ligt Mount Logan, met zijn bijna 6000 meter de hoogste berg van Canada. Het landschap van het park wordt gedomineerd door bergen en gletsjers. Nationaal Park Kluane is samen met Wrangell-St. Elias, Glacier Bay en Tatshenshini-Alsek opgenomen op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO.
2)Whitehorse is een stad in Canada en tevens hoofdstad van het Canadese Yukon, sinds 1952. In dat jaar verhuisde het bestuur van het territorium van Dawson City naar Whitehorse. De ruim opgezette stad heeft 23.205 inwoners (2004) en een oppervlakte van 416,44 km², en wordt omgeven door drie bergen, Grey Mountain in het oosten, Heackel Hill in het noordoosten en Golden Horn Mountain in het zuiden.
3)Robert William Service (January 16, 1874 – September 11, 1958) was a British-Canadian poet and writer who has often been called "the Bard of the Yukon". He is best known for his poems "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee", from his first book, Songs of a Sourdough (1907; also published as The Spell of the Yukon and Other Verses). His vivid descriptions of the Yukon and its people made it seem that he was a veteran of the Klondike gold rush, instead of the late-arriving bank clerk he actually was. Although his work remains popular, Service's poems were initially received as being crudely comical works.
4)SS Klondike was the name of two sternwheelers, the second now a national historic site located in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. Both ran freight between Whitehorse and Dawson City along the Yukon River from 1929-1936 and 1937-1950, respectively. Klondike I was built in 1929 and had the distinction of having 50% more capacity than a regular sternwheeler, while still having the shallow draft and meeting the size requirements in order to travel down the Yukon River. Klondike I had a cargo capacity of 270 metric tonnes without having to push a barge. Klondike I ran aground in June 1936 in 'The Thirty Mile' section of the Yukon River (at 61.6713°N 134.8728°W). The British-Yukon Navigation Company salvaged much of the ship and cannibalized the wreckage to build Klondike II the following year.
Klondike II carried freight until 1950. Due to the construction of a highway connecting Dawson City and Whitehorse, many sternwheelers were decommissioned. In an attempt to save Klondike II, she was converted into a cruise ship. The venture shut down in 1955 due to lack of interest, and Klondike II was beached in the Whitehorse shipyards. The ship was donated to Parks Canada and was gradually restored until 1966, when city authorities agreed to move the ship to its present location, at that time part of a squatters' area. The task required three bulldozers, eight tons of Palmolive soap, a crew of twelve men, and three weeks to complete. Greased log rollers eased the process.
